(Reporter 48, Jan 2003) Moving earth is a fact of life in mining and construction – a painstaking and time-consuming task. Leica Geosystems, in partnership with Tritronics (Australia) Pty Ltd and assisted by their Australian Distributor, C.R. Kennedy & Company Pty Ltd, however, have developed just the solution – the Leica DOZER 2000T. Without even stepping out of the office, the mining engineer and surveyor have direct radio contact with the machine operator who is working with the bulldozer. Digital Terrain Models (DTM) are relayed directly to the machine, guiding and verifying earth grading by real time GPS and completing this task more efficiently, in less time, and with considerable savings across the entire project. more

You are a dozer operator working on a land reclamation site. On top of
your vehicle is an antenna receiving signals from orbiting satellites that measure your position in three dimensions within centimeters. In front of you is a large computer screen that shows a picture of your machine as it moves across the site and displays exact cut and fill values to match a precomputed design surface. more

"P&M Coal currently uses labor intensive methods to calculate the volume of coal and material that is mined from its open pit coal mine in Kemmerer, Wyoming. In the current method, a surveyor walks along the top and bottom of the mine wall to collet 3D points." The case study goes on to compare traditional pit mining surveying with 3D laser scanning, listing all of the benefits of this new technology in open pit mining. more

Global Positioning System (GPS) Machine Guidance is satellite based system utilizing a dualfrequency Real Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS receiver, specialized software to compare calculated position against a pre-set digital Terrain Models (DTMs), correction radio and a rugged, touch-screen
computer display. In laymen term’s, an engineered plan and a computer is used to guide an equipment operator in placement or moving of earth, much like a speedometer tells you your speed in your automobile. more
