Solutions for Construction & Excavation
Whether its construction, rennovation, excavation or surveying, Leica Geosystems has the solution for you.
Controlling The Bow
The Bow, with construction costs at an estimated 1.5 billion Canadian dollars, is the largest office space in Calgary and the tallest building in Canada outside of Toronto. During the construction of a skyscraper as complex as the Bow, the structure will temporarily lose its exact verticality and the building will tilt, contract, and expand. To ensure the functionality of such a complex and innovative design, MMM Geomatics, Ledcor Construction, and steel fabricators/erectors Supreme Walters Joint Venture, established an innovative “neutral” building control network that combined leading-edge technologies, advances in geomatics methodology, and rigorous quality control and quality assurance procedures to deliver precise real-time data. more
Accurate GNSS Everywhere with SmartNet
Ten years ago, RTK surveys typically involved two GPS receivers (a base and a rover), a lot of batteries and cables, two radios, a tripod, a pole, and a backpack to carry it all. Today users can choose between a GPS or a GNSS receiver, and a radio or a mobile phone, and it all fits on the pole. With the establishment of RTK networks, they can also choose to work with an RTK rover within these networks instead of setting up their own base-station. Leica Geosystems SmartNet gives users easy access to precise Network RTK data, where they experience the best availability, reliability, and traceability using internationally recognized standards, combined with flexible and affordable subscription options that meet the needs of the local market. more
Building the Canal of the 21st Century
The Panama Canal revolutionized sea transport from the outset: it linked the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans for the first time, permitting significant time-savings, as ships no longer had to go around South America and face the rough waters of Cape Horn. With a set of new locks it is currently being expanded to meet the needs of modern ship traffic. Leica Geosystems is supplying surveying instruments to the project awardee at one of the greatest civil engineering works ever undertaken. more
Speeding Up on Channel Project
A 3D excavator guidance system is helping earthmoving subcontractor Ebert Construction beat the schedule by 15 percent on a 9-million USD channel repair project for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Topeka, Kansas. more
Leica Builder for the Gardener's College
Askham Bryan College is one of the country's foremost landbased colleges and provides education and training at all levels, from introductory courses for school leavers, right up to honours degrees. The beautiful residential campus at York, is only four miles from the historical city centre. In a competition the Leica Builder proved to be the perfect instrument for the gardeners. more
Reclaiming Efficency
How many surveyors are needed to stay ahead of 75 to 100 construction workers building a USD 100 million wastewater treatment and reclamation plant addition? Using traditional total stations and data collectors, such a project would normally require four or five people to handle the construction survey work. However, new-generation surveying equipment enabled field engineer John Simms to complete all of the work by himself. more
Automating Grader Control to Maximize Efficiency
Grading contractor Bernie Schmidtlein recently invested in an automated grader control system, and he’s glad he did. Last spring Schmidtlein used the system – a Leica PowerGrade 3D system – on its first project: a Home Depot warehouse in Topeka, Kansas. more
Project Savings at Deer Park
One of Australia’s leading construction companies, Leighton Contractors, is realizing the benefits of using Leica GradeSmart and Leica DigSmart machine control technology during construction of Melbourne’s $331 million, 9.3 km Deer Park bypass. Leica Geosystems distributors CR Kennedy fitted several graders and excavators with the latest GNSS 3D technology to deliver higher productivity, machine utilization, and performance. more
Excavating in the Brisbane River
Clean water is a precious commodity – especially when there just isn’t enough. Unfortunately this is the case in the eastern parts of Australia which have been experiencing significant drought over the last two years. As part of an overall plan to forestall the effects of any future drought, and to buffer the effects of the current one, the Queensland Government’s Western Corridor Recycled Water Project was implemented. When it is constructed, it will be the largest recycled water scheme of its kind in the southern hemisphere – no small feat. more
B-Construct is working with Leica Builder
B-construct was founded by Danny Balloey in 1992 and built a strong re-pution for work made to measure in steel bridging, sluices, civil engineering, roof trusses and many other steel construc-tion works. more

Classic As-builts with Scanning
The feature article "Performing Classic As-builts with Laser Scanning," from the March issue of the Professional Surveyor Magazine was written by Chris Gray and was taken from a presentation at the Leica Geosystems HDS Worldwide User Conference in November 2005. The article talks about how the Mollenhauer Group utilizes 3D laser scanning to create classic as-builts for a revitalization project in Orange County. more
Scanning in Construction
"Uses of Scanning in Construction and Fabrication" details the applications and benefits of using high-definition surveys during these phases of a construction project. Specific user examples and project examples are given for civil, architectural, and plant construction projects. The article, by Geoff Jacobs, is the first in a set of three articles and appears in the February 2006 issue of Professional Surveyor magazine. more

The initial task was to restore the granite promenade surrounds and sea wall of the Opera House. more
