The Inselhalle in Lindau, Germany, a conference center on an island in Lake Constance, was to be refurbished and extended to meet modern requirements. Since only incomplete records of the original building existed, project organizers decided to capture the existing features of this old conference hall and its surroundings using laser scanning. The acquired data is now available to architectural consultants for their designs and for virtual “tours”. more

Ten years ago, RTK surveys typically involved two GPS receivers (a base and a rover), a lot of batteries and cables, two radios, a tripod, a pole, and a backpack to carry it all. Today users can choose between a GPS or a GNSS receiver, and a radio or a mobile phone, and it all fits on the pole. With the establishment of RTK networks, they can also choose to work with an RTK rover within these networks instead of setting up their own base-station. Leica Geosystems SmartNet gives users easy access to precise Network RTK data, where they experience the best availability, reliability, and traceability using internationally recognized standards, combined with flexible and affordable subscription options that meet the needs of the local market. more

The Piusa caves are a system of unique sandstone caves located in south-eastern Estonia only a few miles from the Russian border. The caves are the result of manual mining of glasssand during 1922 – 1966 and represent a system of underground galleries with sandstone columns and vaulted ceilings up to 10 m (30 ft) high. Since 2006 the caves have been closed to the public for safety reasons and only a small, secure part can be accessed today. 3D Technologies R&D scanned the caves and created the virtual caves provided at the visitor center using new interactive technology. more

When the USS Missouri was decommissioned on March 31st, 1992, the 887-foot-long Iowaclass battleship looked tired. Her worn and pitted teak deck had supported thousands of naval officers and their crews. The 1998 transfer of “Mighty Mo” to the nonprofit USS Missouri Memorial Association of Honolulu, Hawaii, spawned a new career for the historic battleship as a World War II museum next to the USS Arizona on Pearl Harbor’s Battleship Row. But the directors had an even bigger vision in mind – one that involved repairing and preserving the battleship for generations to come. more

‘Sweden facing climate change – threats and opportunities’ is the title of final report SOU2007:60 presented by the ‘Swedish Commission on Climate and Vulnerability’ in 2007. Appointed by the Swedish government in 2005, the commission’s task is to assess the impact of global climate change on the country. Over the last decades Sweden has suffered from significantly rising numbers of floods, landslides, and erosion. The persistent and increasing risk will affect buildings, roads, and many other infrastructure facilities. The Swedish government has granted a considerable amount of money to protect Sweden’s society, infrastructure, industry, and agriculture. One of the preventive measures is a new digital elevation model delivering highly accurate elevation data of Sweden. more

Loy Surveys had been aware for a number of years that laser scanning was going to be the next big thing in surveying and would eventually become a mainstream technology. They knew they would have to master it in order to stay at the leading edge of surveying. The only question was, when? Senior Surveyor Scott Macleod on how they met the challenge. more

When the CH2M HILL survey team set out to map the City of Woodburn, Oregon’s 1,500 sewer manholes, the challenge was to gather and organize a varied group of data with a limited budget. For each manhole the client wanted: the pipe invert elevation; pipe size and type; documentation of condition; amount of debris; and photos. A traditional approach would have generated an inordinate number of notes that would have been difficult to organize and deliver within budget. After considering various products, the team chose Leica MobileMatriX on ArcGIS, a survey software that provided the team with geographic information system (GIS) capabilities and survey-grade accuracy in the field. The field integration of GIS enabled the team to complete all fieldwork 16 days ahead of schedule and 25 % under budget even while using MobileMatriX for the first time. more

Infoterra, a leader in the provision of geospatial products and services, originally purchased a Leica ADS40 Airborne Digital Sensor, like most other operators, in order to replace a conventional 9 inch film survey camera. However, the “satellite” sensor qualities of the camera have meant that Infoterra has been able to exploit the acquired imagery far more than expected. more

In times of energy shortages and price increases, more attention is paid to ways to exploit energy saving potential. The CCEM Retrofit Project does exactly this in the building sector, an area thought to offer major energy saving potential. One approach to maximise saving potential is to jacket old buildings with prefabricated elements. An indispensable step in the process is highly accurate and reliable acquisition and provision of 3D planning data. This is where geomatics comes in, making an important contribution to future energy savings in buildings within the CCEM Retrofit Project. more

In the reservoirs operated by illwerke vkw, the constant build up of sediment deposits is hampering the work of some of their divisions. Obtaining exact information on the amount and property of the sediment has therefore become very important. Using the Echolot, the Leica GPS500 and the Leica MobileMatriX, the survey crew is “getting to the bottom“ of the problems in the reservoirs. more

"Laser Scanning for Everday Survey Work," first appeared in The American Surveyor • Jan/Feb 2005 issue. The article covers Metco Services of Detroit, Michigan's experiences with 3D laser scanning. In particular, the article touches on a successful as-built project that took place in Kennedy Square. This project was documented in The American Surveyor article and in a case study for Leica Geosystems HDS. Both the article and case study are available for download on this page. more

A new partnership between Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) and Leica Geosystems Italia means that a national GPS network now exists throughout Italy, able to support professional GPS users with precision positioning for various applications and in numerous market segments. As well as providing a DGPS differential correction over a mobile telephone network, TIM's network is used to optimise the use of its antennas and is able to monitor the network for radio frequency leakages, supporting scientific documentation regarding the extent and disposition radio frequency electromagnetic fields – an important issue with health and environmental implications. more
